Karonga District Hospital officials appeal for support

Karonga District Hospital director of health and sanitation services David Sibale has appealed to well-wishers to help with resources to improve the delivery of services, saying the K39 million monthly allocation is insufficient.

He made the appeal on Friday during a performance appraisal ceremony aimed at recognising and rewarding outstanding healthcare workers in the first quarter of 2026.

Said Sibale: “The K39 million allocation that we were getting in the previous financial year was not enough for water and electricity bills, fuel for ambulances and vehicle maintenance. However, despite all these challenges, we have a team that offers their best to serve the community.

“For example, we spend more than K6 million on water, more than K6 million on electricity, K3 million on locum and more than K450 000 for fuel for referrals to Mzuzu Central Hospital. We also have to spend on laundry and ambulance maintenance.”

Karonga district commissioner Willard Mwambo hailed the awardees and the health management team for their unwavering commitment towards duty.

“Despite limited resources, they are serving people with better services. Therefore, it is important to award those providing the quality services,” he said.

Karonga District Hospital nursing officer Dickson Kaferamo, who received best nurse award, said the initiative will motivate workers.

First Capital Bank Karonga Branch manager Penjani Phiri, whose institution supported the event with K2 million, pledged a continued quarterly K2 million support to the facility.
